Welcome!

I'm a clinical social worker independently licensed in Minnesota and Colorado currently providing psychotherapy, supervision, and coaching in my Minneapolis-based office with Lyn-Lake Psychotherapy and Wellness and online.

My practice is rooted in kindness, compassion, and respect for the people I meet with.  If you are looking for change and healing, I would be honored to consult with you about moving forward. While I meet with people for many reasons, I specialize in addressing concerns related to sexuality and intimacy, supporting healing from traumatic experiences, and fostering healthy relationships.  My approach is integrative with use of Narrative, Sensorimotor, EMDR, Emotionally Focused, and Psychodynamic therapy with appreciation for the mind, body, and spirit.  I am a certified sex therapist (CST) and certified EMDR therapist.

I help people develop a pathway to overcoming difficulties while honoring their unique knowledge, abilities, culture, and values.  I am LGBTQA+ affirmative and respect diversity in sexual identity, relationships, sexual orientation, and sexual practices and lifestyles.  I have interest in working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds and have specific experience serving White Mountain Apache, Mayan and Latino people as well as US veterans.  Because there is not one therapy to fit every person, I prioritize working collaboratively to tailor therapy for the person in front of me.

My dog, Madoc, is a certified therapy dog and available to be in the room if you find it appropriate and helpful. Outside of therapy, I am passionate about traveling the world, practicing yoga and meditation, being active outdoors, and building strong and healthy community.

Joe's Specialties

While I consult with people for a wide variety of concerns, I have focused my training and study on a few select areas.  No matter what the concern, I abide by the principle that people are people and problems are problems.  I guide people to change their relationship to problems and move their lives into more preferred ways of experiencing the world.  I use an integrative approach, tailored to the unique concerns of every person and couple that comes to my office.  I am a certified sex therapist and EMDR therapist with advanced training in Narrative therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, Sensorimotor therapy, Motivational Interviewing, mindfulness-based therapies, and a range of practices related to sex therapy and education.  Are your reasons for seeking consult not listed here?  Don't hesitate to contact me to see if our working together would be a good fit.

Sex Therapy

As a certified sex therapist, my goal is to support each of my clients in discovering their unique journey into sexual connection, pleasure, and health.  I provide an open and accepting space where your story will be held without judgement or shaming.  Wondering if seeing a sex therapist is right for you?  People frequently come to see me because they want to be sure they are working with someone who is accepting and knowledgeable about gender, sexual orientation, BDSM, Kink, open relationships and polyamory and more.  Common client concerns include differences in sexual desire, communication about sex, erectile dysfunction and pre-ejaculation, sexual and gender identity, sexual trauma, out-of-control or compulsive sexual behavior, and shame related to sexuality.  Always feel free to contact me to see if therapy is the right fit for you.

Trauma

I have extensive experience treating people affected by sexual, violent, attachment-oriented, historical, disaster-related, and war-related trauma.  Truly, most people experience some form of trauma in their lives.  It often follows us in ways that induce fear, anxiety, sadness, hopelessness, and haunting re-experiencing of the past.  I recognize that approaching a healing process can feel intimidating and triggering.  My first priority is to create a centered space in the room where you feel supported, heard, and trusted, not shamed or judged.  Together, we'll develop a plan to gently look towards the hurt parts and heal at a pace that feels right for you.  I'll listen to you and guide you as you heal and move into your preferred and empowered story of life.  Throughout trauma based therapy, I prioritize creating and maintaining healthy relationships, staying on course with a recovery plan (if applicable), incorporating relevant body movement, and your personal spiritual practices (if applicable).

Couples

When I meet with couples, my goal is to support them in healing and nourishing the relationship.  Using my training in Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and mindfulness-based therapies, I help couples become more aware of the barriers to connection, hear and be heard at an emotional level, and codevelop new patterns of connection and resolving problems.  Couples come to my office for various concerns including affairs, ineffective communication, differences in sexual desire, pre-marital counseling, and concerns associated with sexuality and intimacy.

Men’s Issues

Over the years, I’ve developed a growing interest in consulting with men who are fed up with society's stories about what it means to be a man.  These stories often have negative impacts on their relationships and how they relate to emotions, sex, communication, work, and the self.  If you’re interested in challenging these constructions of how you're told to be and want to move towards a preferred way of relating to the world, I’m happy to support that journey.
